Paradise Coast Chapter 99's

January 2008 News

January 2008

The New Year has arrived and we are all settling in to our normal routines.  I volunteered for this position, having never experienced doing this before.  Please forgive me for boo-boo’s that I might do.

I hope this will inspire other chapters to submit information about their chapter activities.  The deadline for submission is the 15th of the month.  Send info to: Judy Bowser, SE Section Flightline Editor: Sailawayjb@embarqmail.com

Paradise Coast Chapter, the new chapter in SW Florida, has been busy with various activities.  They hosted their first “official” booth at the Page Field Aviation Day, 17 Nov 07.  They sold “Breast Cancer Cure” and endowment items. They gave away aviation magazines, and raffled off a wine and cheese basket, to start their scholarship fund. Three of our 99s had their planes on display, Judy Bowser, N2104R, 1964 Cessna 182; Kaye Tucker, N1724K , 1972  Cessna 172; Nancy Moore, N21077S, 1977 Cessna 182.  Ninety Nine,9911.jpg  Joanna Gollin, CFII Helicopter, sold rides in her helicopter, N103JA, from the beginning (1000) to sundown.

First Coast Chapter, in Eastern Florida, reports:

Some members of the Jacksonville University Flying Team visited and updated us on the recent Regional SAFECON competition of the National Intercollegiate Flying Association.  Embry Riddle placed 1st and JU placed 2nd.  Eileen and husband participated as judges in the event.

The Wings of Freedom and the Wings of Dreams event is the weekend of February 23rd at Keystone Air Park.  A focus of the event is to record the aviation related stories of those who served during the conflicts, and particularly those who served in WW II while we can still interview them.  We previously decided to host the WASPS for the event by helping to transport and act as hostesses for them.  We have not yet received the list of the local WASPS so were not able to evaluate what this would entail.  At this point, we are expecting to bring dishes on Saturday for a lunch for them.  When we get more information from Susan King, we will finalize our plans.

NEWS about and from MEMBERS:

Christy Smith
was not able to attend due to flying her new Cheyenne to South Dakota.

Jetta Schantz was out-of-town for the November meeting, and Summer is dancing in the Beaches version of the Nutcracker on December 15th, so she will miss our Holiday Party.

Andrea Ross regretfully needs to drop out of active participation due to her other commitments.  We hope to see her again soon when things change for her.

Eileen Tonkinson missed the October meeting due to cruising on the Western Mediterranean.  She enjoyed judging for the NIFA competition and would consider participating again.

Anne Fletcher writes that she attended the Women Military Aviators conference in Dallas, TX.  Many of the WASP belong to this organization.  While many of my favorites have passed away (over 30 died in the last two years), the WASP who were there are still vibrant, sassy, witty, and intellectually sharp.  Your life will be enhanced by getting to know these ladies.

Reba Ludlow  was named to the Aviation Advisory Board of Florida Community College of Jacksonville.  She writes that we had the Collings Foundation's planes in SGJ. In fact, I got to actually fly the B-24 for about 30 minutes on its way back to New Smyrna. What a thrill!

Millie Thomas
enjoyed her 50th Anniversary cruise from Montreal, Canada.

Susan Upchurch now owns a Decathalon.
